Description of Mrs. Dooley's Media ARTS Program:
"Look and think before opening the shutter.
The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera."
~Yousuf Karsh
HAAT’s Media Arts program, instructed by Joan Dooley, consists of three distinct media: Photography, Graphic Design and Stop Motion Animation.
These are first and foremost, FINE ART classes. Although technical craft is important in any media, instruction focuses on the fine art and literacy-based aspect of the media at hand.
In addition to the three media mentioned above, we are building an Advanced Placement 2D Studio Art program consisting of Photography, Design, Drawing, Mixed 2D Media and Collage. The AP program is scheduled to launch in the 2013-2014 academic year. The emphasis of this class is the building of an art portfolio that demonstrates artistic excellence, by showing command of the use of the elements and principles of design and using art as a means of communicating ideas and feelings.
An overarching goal for my program is for students to understand that photography – and the other media we study- goes beyond the surface to explore deeper meanings. I want my students to be able to dig deep and think and write before they make art. Without that depth, art becomes more craft than art. I want them to understand that artists make deliberate choices using conceptual and formal elements to communicate an idea, feeling, or spirit. This understanding will then help them make thoughtful, expressive photographs and designs rather than snapshots or empty designs that convey information in an accidental, superficial way. My lessons build toward a final creative project and often use the following methods (1) analysis and discussion of successful art made in the same vein; (2) reflective writing (3) research, both visual and written and (4) brainstorming and Socratic discussions on how to plan art that expresses ideas and feelings visually.
Since these classes are managed out of a computer lab with a lot of daily equipment checkout and very little IT support, there is a great need for parent and community volunteers. Please call or email me if you can contribute any time. We desperately need help in the following areas: lab prep, coordination of contests, web publication, guest speakers, and exhibition program. All potential volunteers/ mentors, please contact me at: [email protected]
